Okay, well, now she was on stage. Surrounded by boys. Out of the frying pan... oh God... And what were they doing now, play-acting? I'm on a stage full of drama queens!

But at least drama was something she could handle. And the mention of 'flowers' and 'butterflies' always did something to get her hackles up. She took a deep breath, and reached for the microphone, plucking it out of the hand of the erstwhile lead singer. "Butterfly?" she said, pitching her voice in that sweet, dangerous voice she used just before she drove someone's face into the floor. "I'm afraid that I am nothing so insubstantial."

It was easier to pretend she wasn't scared to death when she was using all her bravado to put these boys in their place.

[ooc: i hope your father is doing much better and things are going better for you.]

Under the nearly white foundation, Kazuha felt her face flush in a strange mixture of shock and an emotion she couldn't quite identify. Anger or indignation, perhaps hurt? She wanted to exclaim her innocence, that a razorblade butterfly was pretty dangerous, that she was only trying to help, that she--? That she what? That she wasn't used to such bizarre interactions?

For a moment, Kazuha stood in hesitation, watching Sato back away from the girl with a smile on his face. Having no skill with words, Kazuha simply made the motions of dusting her hands off in the geisha's direction and walked back to her corner of the stage. In the end, she was mostly in the band for herself, not the members, not the crowd. She kept that in mind, but scanned the crowd regardless, looking for the familiar face that she felt she could take comfort in.

When she saw the reflection of lights on a camera lense, she smiled slightly and turned back to her koto. Flicking a glance in the geiasha-girl's direction, Kazuha smirked and started into one of the girl's songs. Not quite prepared for her to lead off, the rest of the band had to react quickly.

Wow. The thought flickered through her head as she seized the microphone. I just hurt her feelings.

She'd seen the look- brief as it was- that had flickered across the koto player's face. It was the last thing she'd expected. She was used to taking it- and dishing it out- when it came to insults; her cousins were professionals. But even her sharpest barbs rarely drew such a reaction from them.

Waitaminute. Did I just call him a 'her'?

Her eyes flicked to the side, glancing at the koto player. How ridiculous. These bands were always all-male. And yet...

The intro was starting. No more time to speculate about it now... They were smart, she would give them that. Her bit about the 'butterfly' led easily into the first song in the journal, which was, fittingly, called "Dragonfly." And they'd picked up the cue without batting an eye. Or dropping an eyelash.

"Minna-san, konbanwa!" she called into the microphone, in her "Sayuri" voice. "I hope you will permit this unworthy one to entertain you this evening!"

God help me...

They played her upbeat, and she launched into the song before she could think enough to stop herself.

o/`I saw the way you're watching me, felt your gaze on my porcelain face,o/` she sang, tracing a line down her pale cheek with one fingertip. Unlike her sweet, high-pitched Sayuri voice, her singing voice had enough grit to polish granite. o/`A pretty, perfect China doll with elegance and grace. But I'll tell you, boy, this dream you see, is something that I'll never be. I'm not this satin fallacy... I'm a dragonfly, flying free. o/`

[[Yes, the song should be in Japanese... it probably doesn't sound anything like a Japanese song or lyric pattern, but I don't speak more than 10 words in the language, so we're just going to have to pretend. ^^

Oh yes, and my dad is home now, and doing just fine. ^^ Thanks!]

Kazuha was not so lost to the music that she did not feel surprised by 'Sayuri's' voice. Well, the girl certainly could belt out a tune if she so desired. Trying to lose her earlier feeling, which she couldn't understand anyway, the girl who looked like a boy trying to look like a girl, did her best to improvise the best ways of using her koto to pull out and highlight the girl's voice.

Having no choice but to back off on vocals, Sato returned to his guitar and melted back to let the geisha girl have the spotlight. Kazuha thought this was probably a herculean effort for their spot-light loving lead singer. As a visual band, most of them wanted the spotlight; it was hard for them to stand down and let somebody else do their thing.

Still, they tried their best, they had to give a good show for the geisha girl. When she was gone, they'd rip the roof off and playfully assault the audience. She threw a look over at Sato. He kept looking at the neo-geisha in a way that clearly spelled interest. Kazuha shook her head and kept playing. Sato adored girls that played rough and this girl seemed to be good at that.

Closing her eyes, Ruri tried to forget that there was a crowded room full of people listening to her sing, and focused instead on the music. The drumbeat was solid- a little faster than she'd imagined it, but in a way she liked. It added power to the song, and drive; and it meant she'd be off the stage sooner.

At the end of the verse, she quickly did the only thing she could think of to keep herself from having to interact with the audience thronging at the foot of the stage. She put down the microphone, and danced.

Her mother had always made her attend dance class. She liked the classes, but hated the recitals. Kickboxing was, for her, in many ways like ballet. The discipline was the same, the focus, holding the center. Only, in one you were choreographed, and the other was freeform, and occasionally painful.

She might never be a ballerina. Still, she could move, something that helped her in every kickboxing match she did, and whenever someone conned her into performing.

o/`My wings are real, stained glass and steel, and nothing you can break o/` Picking up the mic again, she jumped right into the next verse. o/`And if you think my pride is yours to take, that's your mistake o/` On a whim, she turns, looking at the crowd over her left shoulder, the mic in her left hand. o/` There's nothing here that's fantasy, o/` she sang, dipping the already-low collar of her kimono down to reveal the vivid tattoo on her left shoulder. o/`Just this little dragonfly, that's me!o/`

Suki paused in her rhythmic movements to frown up at the stage. Something had just occured to her, something that made the day she had tried to forget come edging back...

"Isn't she one of the..." she muttered under her breath in English. She just couldn't seem to recall... She had met so many people that day, but something was nagging at her to drag the girl off the stage and away from those men.
